Project spotlight: The Pink Pavilion by Burgess Treep & Knight Architects

It’s hard not to have an emotional response when you see a vibrant hot pink hue. That was certainly the desired effect when Lucy Treep of Burgess Treep & Knight Architects selected Resene Colour Me Pink for the ceiling of this outdoor pavilion in Auckland’s Grey Lynn. The outdoor room which opens off the dining room of the main house connecting the home to the garden was an opportunity for some playful theatrics with Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Alabaster on the white trims and cantilevered posts and Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Colour Me Pink on the clean flat ceiling adorned with globe lights from ECC.

The hot pink hue was inspired by the immersive artworks of James Durrell to create a joyous sensation.

“This project became an opportunity to break away from beige,” says the firm’s Lilli Knight.

“In discussions the possibilities were broad, but the pink kept rising to the surface and eventually was selected. The inspiration was in part the vibrancy of tropical colours, partly the experience of having stood inside a James Turrell light installation artwork. The result continues to provide joy.”

The pavilion was the perfect blank canvas for the colour scheme of Resene Colour Me Pink and Resene Alabaster. The four cantilevered posts rise directly out of the ground, with a tightly detailed roof structure that creates a flat ceiling plane contained within the frame of the fascia and beam structure at the perimeter edges.
