Lo and be’holder’: Make your own DIY large cup holders for your car

25 Jan 2023

With extra-large water bottles all the rage, many of us have found that our car’s cup holders are just too small. These DIY cup holders use a pipe extender to help your water bottle stay safe and secure and stop the risk of spillage on your seats! With so many different Resene colours to choose from you can make this bottle holder a statement piece in your car.

You will need:

  • 100x65mm level inverter reducer. Emma got hers from the helpful staff at Plumbing World in Mount Wellington
  • Paintbrush
  • Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer
  • Resene testpots in paint colours of your choice. Emma opted for a metallic finish and used Resene Regent Grey and Resene Kalgoorie Sands for a basecoat to match her metallic topcoats of Resene Infinity and Resene Rose Gold.
  • Optional – Resene Aquaclear as a final clear finish to help protect against scratching.

Step 1: Start by applying Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the pipe extender. Make sure you let this dry for a few days in order to help your paint adhere to the surface.

Step 2: Paint two coats of your chosen Resene colour on to the outside of your cup holder and allow to dry between coats.

Emma opted for a metallic finish so she used corresponding basecoat colours Resene Regent Grey and Resene Kalgoorie Sands, then coated them in Resene Infinity and Resene Rose Gold for some shine.

Step 3: Once dry, you can use your new cupholder. The smaller end of the pipe is designed to fit in your regular car cup holder, and the wider end can fit your oversized drink bottle.

Optional: Apply two coats of Resene Aquaclear over the metallic finish for extra protection against scratching.
