Turn up the heat this winter with these warm-toned designs
Here we are in mid-July and yes, it’s cold outside! Just the time to introduce warm colours to your home and bring in the sunshine, whatever’s happening outdoors. Whether it’s your walls, floor or even exterior, Resene has you covered.
Enjoy the warmth of Tuscan tiles – without the install. This wall is painted in Resene Eighth Pearl Lusta, painted ‘tile’ floor in Resene Tuscany with grout painted in Resene Raven, cabinet in Resene Blank Canvas with doors in Resene Gold Coast with ‘cane’ in Resene Double Dutch White and hook racks and shelf in Resene Double Dutch White. A holiday in Italy might be a long way off, but why not just pretend you live there? Resene Tuscany transports you to a place where skies are blue and an olive grove is just outside your door. A terracotta tile effect can be painted with a fraction of the effort of laying a new floor. Simply paint the main shade, allow to dry thoroughly, then mark out a grid with tape and ‘grout’ with Resene Raven. If you love this warm terracottta look, try other shades like Resene Sante Fe, Resene Cumin, Resene Twizel and Resene Crail.
There’s always time to relax. This chair is painted in Resene Sunbaked, with the colour carried through to the pot and stool. Creamy Resene Half Spanish White is used on the walls, and the desert-sunset vibe is further enhanced by tonal layers of the peachy, sandy shades of Resene Shabby Chic and Resene Despacito. Anchor the look with a Resene Colorwood Whitewash floor to keep it grounded in nature. Project by Kate Alexander, image by Bryce Carleton.
Tuscan tones can also be found with Resene Whiskey Sour and Resene Dark Buff. Or head to the beach with Resene Gold Coast or Resene Sandcastle. Resene Sunbaked brings the glow of sunset in the desert while a burst or strip of Resene Clockwork Orange (below), Resene Hero and Resene Tango sing of summer days.
Orange has real a-peel. These trims painted in Resene Clockwork Orange frame walls in Resene Eighth Truffle, floorboards in Resene Colorwood Breathe Easy, door in Resene Ebony Clay with edge in Resene Putty and handle in Resene Clockwork Orange, table base in Resene Blank Canvas, table edge in Resene Putty and tabletop in Resene Truffle. DIY artwork painted in Resene Clockwork Orange and tall vase in Resene Triple Truffle with stripe in Resene Ebony Clay. Project by Kate Alexander, image by Bryce Carleton.
Those wary of too much vivid colour can relax – there are plenty of ways to increase the temperature without making everything bright. Complement a pop of orange and lift the space with warm neutrals such as Resene Eighth Pearl Lusta, Resene Quarter Spanish White, Resene Alpaca, Resene Orchid White or Resene Bianca.
Saturated colours can add earthy depth to a space, and plenty of these are warm in their tone. This background is painted in Resene Digeridoo with A4 drawdown paint swatches in (from right to left) Resene Finch, Resene Cumin, Resene Fahrenheit, Resene Redwood and Resene Eighth Joss, tealight holder in Resene Woodrush and vases in (clockwise from top left) Resene Twine, Resene Black Forest and Resene Toffee. Cushion cover and throw from Citta. Project by LauraLynn Johnston, image by Bryce Carleton.
Warm by name and also by nature, Resene Fahrenheit brings a rich depth that pairs well with colours of the land – toasty browns such Resene Redwood, Resene Toffee or Resene Digeridoo. These shades are a great foil for greens, which bring calm and quiet. Resene New Leaf takes us back to that olive grove, and is ripe to match with other warm stone, woody tones including Resene Napa, Resene Route 66 andResene Sambuca.
Fancy something hot hot hot? Resene Fire is a burnt brick orange or go metallic with Resene Copper Fire – try it as an economical statement in a kitchen instead of tiles. After painting, be sure to seal the area with Resene Aquaclear, so the surface remains durable and easy to clean.
And while we’re in the kitchen, there’s a whole spice cupboard to get your teeth into. Resene Hot Chile and Resene Jalapeno – as the names suggest – are at the red end of the spectrum, while Resene Cumin, Resene Korma and Resene Allspice are deep, delicious browns.
Begin dreaming of summer by planning that deck project you’ve been thinking about. Resene Woodsman Uluru on the decking. It works well with the added greenery from the plants and the touch of Resene Teak on the table and large plant pot. The back wall is given added interest in grey-green Resene Aspiring with Resene FX Paint Effects Medium mixed with Resene Moon Mist. The breeze block sidewall and the small vase on the table are also in Resene Moon Mist. The bench seat is Resene Aspiring and the smaller planter is Resene Siam. Cushions from Allium Interiors and Shut the Front Door. Project by Vanessa Nouwens, image by Wendy Fenwick.
Don’t forget outdoor areas too. Winter is the ideal time to plan that deck project you’ve been meaning to get around to so that you’re ready to go when a sunny day comes along. Stains such as Resene Woodsman Uluru let the natural grain of the timber show through while protecting the material and prolonging its life. There are many shades of Resene Woodsman to choose from, including other lighter hues such as Resene Driftwood and Resene Heartwood.
