Magic in Mangawhai: This Heart Foundation Lottery home could be yours

15 Mar 2023

Almost half way between Auckland and Whangarei, you’ll find the gorgeous seaside town on the eastern coast of Northland, Mangawhai, and this new home. Fully furnished and expertly decorated with Resene paint colours, this home could be all yours.

This first-prize, expertly built, three bedroom and two bathroom home, is a lovely choice for either a full-time or holiday home. It’s also the highest valued Lottery home yet, at an impressive $1.485 million – but it could be yours for just a $15 ticket through the Heart Foundation Lottery.

The exterior has gorgeous street appeal, painted in Resene Gravel and Resene Half Stonewall on the weatherboards.

Liz Halpin, Lottery Operations Manager at the Heart Foundation, says, “The last time we built a Lottery home in Mangawhai was in 2017, and we’re very excited to be back. It’s up-and-coming and being chosen as a place to settle down as it’s less than a two-hour drive to Auckland  airport. Better yet, once the new motorway is completed this year, that will come down to just over an hour from the Harbour Bridge.”

“Mangawhai has all the amenities you would need,” says Liz. “Plenty of lovely cafes and eateries to enjoy, nice markets to peruse and there’s lots more commercial establishments starting to be built.”

The open-plan living and dining is painted in stunning neutrals, Resene Rice Cake on the walls and Resene Double Alabaster on the ceiling and trims, which opens up the space and allows the homeowner to really make it their own.

While Mangawhai has been known as a popular holiday spot for a long time, the new developments in the area are attracting a much more permanent crowd.

Reflecting the stunning white-sand beaches the township is known for, the home has been decorated in crisp whites, creams and earthy tones. The neutral yet sophisticated Resene colour palette means someone can really make it their own.

Interior designer Alexandra Hyman from Jennian Homes Rodney shares with us how she chose to use Resene colours to create this calming, cosy environment.

What was your brief for this home?

“I was asked to create a warm, inviting home that still had a modern-feel and felt right in this relaxed beachside town.”

What colours did you choose to best reflect this?

“Externally, we selected Resene Gravel and Resene Half Stonewall as natural earthy colours to meet the requirements of the unique environment and desirability of the Whai Awa development. On the inside, we chose to use Resene Rice Cake on the walls and Resene Double Alabaster on the ceilings as a winning combo to create a soft and gentle palette. Resene Half Inside Back has been used on the feature walls as a nod to the coastal environment.”

Taking inspiration from the sand, sea and natural environment, Resene Half Inside Back was used as the feature wall in this bedroom, with Resene Rice Cake on the walls and Resene Double Alabaster on the ceiling and trims.

What was the biggest challenge you faced during this project?

“Designing a home without a specific client in mind will always have its challenges. However, the end result is a beautiful modern interior that has simple classic features to appeal to any future owner’s aesthetic.”

What was your favourite aspect of the design?

“Knowing that the home would be won by one lucky family, as well as supporting the Heart Foundation, a great cause when so many New Zealanders are impacted by heart disease, was definitely the highlight for me.”

This chic bathroom with earthy tiles, wooden cabinet and a relaxing bathtub is painted in Resene Rice Cake, with Resene Double Alabaster on the ceiling and trims.

In partnership with their long-time key supporters, Jennian Homes, the Heart Foundation Lottery offers the life-changing first prize of a fully furnished home six times each year.

Lottery homes are built in lifestyle destinations throughout New Zealand and finished in Resene paints and stains.

You can support the Heart Foundation Lottery by purchasing tickets at heartlottery.org.nz. Funds raised from the Lottery go towards life-saving heart research and heart disease prevention programmes, keeping New Zealand families together for longer.
