Potluck perfection: DIY cutlery caddy

15 Feb 2024

Make summer entertaining easy with this DIY terracotta pot cutlery caddy. This is super easy to make and so useful. Best of all, you can paint it to match your tableware! We used the bright blue shades of Resene Resolution Blue and Resene Kumutoto, but you can get creative with whatever Resene testpots catch your eye. Happy entertaining!

You will need:

  • 4 x 13cm terracotta pots
  • 1 x piece of MDF, 30cm x 30cm x 18mm
  • 1 x piece of MDF, 30cm x 15cm x 18mm
  • Handle and screws
  • Pencil and ruler
  • Fine paintbrush
  • Glue (superglue or similar)
  • Resene Aquapel & Terracotta Sealer
  • Resene testpot paintbrush
  • Resene testpots in colours of your choice. We used Resene Resolution Blue, Resene Half Resolution Blue, Resene Kumutoto and Resene Half Kumutoto.

Step 1: Give each of your pots a coat of Resene Aquapel & Terracotta Sealer inside and out.

Step 2: Measure the middle of the large piece of MDF and draw a line down the middle in pencil.

Step 3: Screw the small piece of MDF in the middle of the large piece of MDF.

Step 4: Paint the caddy in your chosen Resene paint colour. We used Resene Resolution Blue. Two coats will give best coverage.

Step 5: Screw in the handle to the top of caddy.

Step 6: Paint your four terracotta pots in your chosen Resene paint colours. We painted two in Resene Half Kumutoto and two in Resene Kumutoto.

Step 7: Take a fine paintbrush and paint the words Knives, Forks and Spoons onto three of the pots in your chosen Resene paint colour. We used Resene Half Resolution Blue. We also added a border in the same colour. The fourth pot can be used for napkins, straws or other items.

Step 8: Glue the bottom of the pots to the caddy and add your cutlery. Enjoy.
