Stripe up your life with this DIY bedside table

28 Sep 2023

This easy-to-achieve effect makes a big statement and works best with symmetrical-shaped furniture. We used an old stool and turned it into some bedside bling by giving it a striking makeover. Grab some Resene testpots in your favourite colours and give it a go!

You will need:

  • Wooden stool – we used a 45cm Peg Stool from Freedom, but you can also recycle an old stool you have at home
  • 20mm wide low tack masking tape
  • Resene testpot paintbrush
  • Resene testpots in two contrasting colours of your choice. We used Resene Poured Milk and Resene Charcoal.

Step 1: Paint the stool in a base colour of your choice. We used Resene Poured Milk. Apply two coats.

Step 2: Using 20mm masking tape, place strips of tape vertically across half of the stool and horizontally across the other half as demonstrated in the photos. You can use a ruler and pencil to measure these out if you wish.

Tip: Be sure to run your thumbnail firmly down the outer edges of the masking tape and go over the untaped areas in another coat of your base colour first, this will ensure your contrasting colour doesn’t bleed underneath.

Step 3: Paint over the untaped areas in your contrasting colour. We used Resene Charcoal. Let the paint dry completely, then apply a second coat.

Step 4: Remove the masking tape to reveal your stunning stripy pattern.

Tip: It is recommended to leave your completed stool/table to cure for one week before using it. If your stool will likely get a lot of wear, opt for Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel for a more durable and washable finish.

This refreshed bedside table looks striking with these golden yellow walls. The walls are painted in Resene Cleopatra, floor is finished in Resene Colorwood Mid Greywash and the table lamp is finished in Resene Woodsman Whitewash.
